Medieval city protected under its ramparts, Vannes was built as an amphitheater at the edge of the Morbihan bay with the objective to have a dynamic mercantile activity through it harbor.
Protected from the wind and the bad weather, the Harbor of Vannes is today a pleasant harbor for sailing boats....
The city is one of the prettiest medieval cities in south Brittany with old wood based built houses from the 11th to the 15th centuries.
Vannes is also the administrative city of the County (department) of Morbihan.
To visit:
- The Ramparts: Built over Gallo-romans remains, the Ramparts of Vannes are surrounding the city with beautiful gardens 'a la Francaise'.
- The Public Washing places where the women of the city were meeting and were cleaning their clothes. They are built on the edge of the river with long roofs (like a bus stop) and they were active until the beginning of the 20th century.
- Oceanographic aquarium featuring more than 50 ponds with natural habitats for more than 1000 species of fishes and other aquatics creatures. They have a very nice collection of sharks
- Place Henry V : a Seri of 16th century gabled roofed houses around this pretty square in the center of the medieval heart of Vannes
